Heavy rain in Delhi airport areas on September 1, Monday evening, led to widespread disruptions at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, forcing airlines to issue urgent advisories and passengers to brace for delays.

Delhi Flight Delays Due to Heavy Rain

According to travel portal Ixigo, by 6:50 p.m., at least six flights had been canceled and more than 30 delayed at IGI Airport. Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad also reported delays on four flights.

The downpour, accompanied by strong winds, reduced visibility, and caused waterlogging, resulting in Delhi flight delays across both domestic and international sectors.

The situation underscored how heavy rain disrupts Delhi flights, affecting not just air schedules but also ground transport to and from the airport.

Weather Alerts Across NCR

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed Delhi and Ghaziabad under a yellow alert, while Noida, Faridabad, and Gurugram were under orange alerts.

Meanwhile, rising Yamuna river levels added to concerns. Officials warned that the river could reach the evacuation mark of 206 meters by Tuesday evening, increasing risks for nearby low-lying areas.

Airlines responded quickly with passenger guidance as heavy rain disurpts Delhi airport operations:

  • IndiGo urged passengers to plan commutes in advance and check flight status before heading out.
  • Air India posted on X that rainfall could impact flights and advised travelers to allow extra time.
  • SpiceJet warned of flight cancellations due to heavy rain in Delhi, urging passengers to monitor updates.
  • Akasa Air pointed to traffic congestion around the airport, recommending additional travel time.

These airline advisories are aimed to minimize inconvenience as delays rippled across schedules.

Wider Impact of Heavy Rain Disrupting Delhi Flights

Beyond the airport, the rains caused waterlogging on major roads, slowing traffic throughout the capital. Combined with the looming flood threat from the Yamuna, the disruptions highlight the vulnerability of urban infrastructure during peak monsoon spells.

Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and river levels, while airlines maintain round-the-clock support for affected passengers. Travelers are advised to check flight status frequently, allow extra travel time, and follow official advisories closely as the heavy rains persist.
