Indian travellers heading abroad often worry about what can and cannot go into their baggage. Now, there’s a new rule you need to pay attention to: the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) have banned certain cordless hair styling tools from checked luggage. The penalty? Fines that can soar above $17,000 (approx. ₹14 lakh), and in rare cases, even arrest.
What Exactly Is Banned?
Cordless curling irons and straighteners that are powered by butane gas cartridges, lithium-ion batteries, or lithium-metal batteries are no longer allowed in checked baggage. These are now listed as TSA-prohibited items, since they pose a risk of fire, leaks, or explosions in the aircraft’s cargo hold—an area where fires are nearly impossible to control.
A TSA spokesperson explained the concern: “If these items can catch fire in the cargo area where checked bags are transported, there’s no one there to put it out.”

What You Can Still Carry
The FAA clarifies that these devices are permitted in carry-on bags, but with strict conditions:
- A safety cover must be secured over the heating element.
- The tool must be protected from accidental activation.
- Only one tool and one gas cartridge are allowed per passenger. Spare cartridges, however, are completely banned.
The good news for those who prefer traditional styling tools is that corded curling irons and straighteners—the plug-in versions—are still allowed in checked and carry-on bags. These carry-on and checked bag regulations make it easier to know exactly where your devices should go.
Why It Matters for Indian Travellers
Indians frequently fly to the U.S. for work, study, or leisure, often carrying personal grooming gadgets. These new checked baggage restrictions mean you must be extra cautious when packing. A cordless hair tool mistakenly placed in checked luggage could be confiscated, leaving you with a steep penalty.
Civil fines can exceed $17,000 (around ₹14 lakh), and even lesser violations may still carry penalties worth several lakh rupees. In some cases, offenders could face arrest and legal action in the U.S. These are some of the strictest airport luggage fines travellers can encounter.
Since airlines worldwide often align with U.S. aviation safety standards, Indian travellers should also expect similar enforcement in other destinations. It is strongly advised to check specific rules and country guidelines before departure.
Pack smart, fly safe, and save yourself from penalties that could burn a hole deeper than any hair straightener ever could.
