As the L.A. wildfires continue to devastate the region, Airbnb is taking strong measures to combat price gouging and ensure fair pricing during disasters. The company has introduced strict guidelines for hosts in Los Angeles and Ventura counties to prevent exploitative pricing and protect displaced individuals from further hardship.

Airbnb's Price Gouging Response

Airbnb is addressing the growing concerns of price gouging with its new policy that limits price increases to no more than 10% above pre-fire levels. This move aligns with California’s state of emergency laws, prohibiting price gouging in the aftermath of natural disasters.

Hosts attempting to raise prices beyond this threshold will receive an error message, effectively blocking them from overcharging those already facing the catastrophic effects of the wildfires.

Airbnb’s Wildfire Support: Emergency Housing Relief

Beyond pricing actions, Airbnb’s nonprofit arm, Airbnb.org, has stepped in to support those affected by the L.A. wildfires. It has already succeeded in offering free emergency housing to over 25,000 displaced individuals, families, and first responders.

In addition to housing, 6,000 pets have been accommodated, ensuring no one is left behind during this critical time.

The organization has partnered with 211 LA to fund 50,000 additional nights of temporary housing, extending support to those who need it most as the wildfires continue.

The wildfires have further deepened the housing crisis in L.A., leaving many without a home. Reports of price hikes up to 43.2% in some areas have prompted widespread criticism. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has warned sternly against price gouging, reminding landlords and property owners that such practices are illegal and punishable by fines or jail time.

By limiting price increases and offering free temporary housing, Airbnb has demonstrated its commitment to fair pricing during disasters and supported the recovery efforts in L.A. during this devastating wildfire season.
