Tourism New Zealand is intensifying its focus on India as a source market, aiming to boost visitor numbers during the country’s off-peak seasons. Recent data indicates that 75% of Indian travelers considering a trip to New Zealand are willing to visit between March and November, marking the third-highest off-peak travel interest among all international markets.
Indian Travel Market a Key Driver of New Zealand Tourism Growth
Angela Blair, Tourism New Zealand’s General Manager for International Markets, emphasized the significance of this opportunity. “India is an incredibly important source market for New Zealand tourism and represents a significant opportunity for future international arrivals growth, particularly in the off-peak.”
To capitalize on this interest, the agency plans to increase year-round arrivals from India, focusing on festive periods such as Diwali in October and November, as well as the Indian summer break between April and June.
Blair noted, “Many holiday visitors from India book through a travel agent so it’s important we meet with the travel trade sector in India to grow relationships and ultimately book more holidays to New Zealand. We will also be launching more activities throughout the year to help potential Indian visitors fall in love with New Zealand’s landscapes and people.”
New Zealand Travel Trends: How Indian Tourists Are Shaping the Market
Currently, over 14 million Indians are actively considering visiting New Zealand, with 64% placing it at the top of their travel bucket list. In November 2024, total arrivals from India reached 129% of pre-COVID levels, with holiday arrivals recovering to 109% of pre-pandemic numbers. New Zealand tourism growth is being driven by increasing interest from Indian travelers seeking adventure, nature, and cultural experiences.
As part of its strategy, Tourism New Zealand is preparing for Kiwi Link India, scheduled for July 2025, to strengthen ties with Indian travel agents and promote the country’s attractions to potential visitors. This move aligns with broader New Zealand travel trends, which show rising demand from Indian tourists for premium and adventure-driven experiences.
