A new U.S. travel advisory to India has been issued by the U.S. Department of State, urging American women to avoid solo travel in India due to growing safety concerns. The advisory, reissued on June 16, draws attention to rising cases of sexual violence and calls for increased vigilance among travelers, especially women.

The State Department categorizes India under Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, but places parts of the country under more severe warnings. The update notes that “rape is one of the fastest-growing crimes in India,” with assaults reported even at major tourist attractions and in urban areas.

Is it Safe for Women to Travel Alone in India?

The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi has specifically advised against solo female travel in India, citing significant safety risks. “Violent crimes, such as sexual assault, have occurred at tourist sites and in other locations,” the advisory states. The update reflects growing international concern over India travel risks for American women.

Women traveling to India are urged to:

  • Travel in groups or with trusted local contacts
  • Avoid isolated or poorly lit areas at night
  • Use licensed transport services only
  • Stay in well-reviewed hotels with strong security

High-Risk Areas: Do Not Travel

In addition to the national warning, the advisory designates several regions as Level 4: Do Not Travel, including:

  • Jammu & Kashmir (excluding Ladakh)
  • Manipur, due to recent ethnic violence
  • India–Pakistan border regions, due to the potential armed conflict
  • Maoist insurgency-affected areas in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha

The travel warning for women also extends to certain northeastern states under Level 3: Reconsider Travel, where ethnic tensions and insurgency persist.

Legal Reminders and Emergency Planning

The U.S. government reminds travelers that satellite phones and GPS trackers are illegal in India and can lead to severe fines or jail time. It also notes limited emergency support in rural regions.

This latest U.S. travel advisory to India signals elevated personal safety concerns, particularly among solo female travelers. While many parts of India remain accessible, the U.S. government strongly advises caution and strategic planning to ensure a safe visit.
