Switzerland’s most ambitious alpine transportation project has improved access to the car-free village of Mürren with the launch of the world’s steepest cable car. The groundbreaking system connects Stechelberg and Mürren in just four minutes, marking a revolutionary advancement in mountain transport technology along the renowned Jungfrau region.
Setting New Alpine Engineering Standards
The steepest cable car in Switzerland has engineered a remarkable 159.4% gradient – meaning it climbs nearly 1.6 meters vertically for every horizontal meter traveled. This exceptional feat covers 775 meters in elevation across a 1,194-meter journey.
Among Switzerland cable car attractions, this installation features specialized Carvatech cabins with an 11-meter suspension arm, specifically engineered to maintain cabin stability at such extreme angles.
The Swiss alpine cable car employs the AURO (Autonomous Ropeway Operation) system, representing a significant advance in automated transport. This sophisticated technology uses an integrated network of cameras and sensors for driverless operation, ensuring precise control and enhanced safety.
Each cabin accommodates 85 passengers, with an impressive hourly capacity of 800 people, while the automated freight system can handle up to 6.8 tonnes of cargo per trip.

The new Funifor system – a dual-track cable car design known for exceptional wind resistance – operates between Mürren and Birg. This advanced system allows for independent track operation during maintenance while providing synchronized service during peak periods.
