Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has made aviation history by managing 1,036 flights in just 24 hours, surpassing its own previous airport world record for single runway operations.
On November 21, 2025, it became the talk of the aviation world as the airport handled an unprecedented volume of air traffic—755 domestic and 281 international flights. This milestone, achieved during peak festive season travel, demonstrates India’s growing aviation capabilities on the global stage.
Record-Breaking Numbers Tell the Story
The Mumbai airport flight record saw the facility process 1,70,488 passengers on this historic day: 1,21,527 traveling domestically and 48,961 on international routes. This figure nearly matched CSMIA’s all-time passenger record of 1,70,516, set in January 2025.
The Mumbai airport flight movements included 520 arrivals and 516 departures, maintaining perfect operational balance throughout the day. This achievement eclipsed the previous record of 1,032 flights, set on November 11, 2023.
Technology Powers Seamless Operations
Mumbai Airport’s success stems from strategic investments in digital infrastructure. Self-baggage drop units, self-check-in kiosks, and DigiYatra identity verification systems significantly reduced passenger processing times during this high-traffic day.
The upgraded Airport Operations Control Centre enabled real-time coordination between all stakeholders, ensuring punctuality and service quality remained consistent despite record volumes.
Where Indians Are Flying

Domestic travel dominated the traffic, with Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Kolkata emerging as the busiest routes. These metro-to-metro connections reflect India’s robust economic corridors and business travel patterns.
International passengers showed a strong preference for Dubai, Abu Dhabi, London Heathrow, Doha, and Jeddah—highlighting Mumbai‘s strategic role as India’s gateway to the Middle East and Europe.
Looking Ahead
This milestone demonstrates significant progress for the sector. Operated jointly by the Adani Group and Airports Authority of India, CSMIA handled 55.12 million passengers in FY25, making it India’s second-busiest airport. The facility also processes over 0.85 million metric tonnes of cargo annually, serving as a crucial export-import hub.
With Navi Mumbai International Airport set to open soon, the region’s aviation capacity will expand further. This development will help manage growing demand as India’s air travel market continues its rapid expansion.
The record-setting day proves India’s aviation infrastructure is ready to support ambitious growth targets, positioning the country as an increasingly accessible destination for global business and leisure travelers.
