The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has implemented a temporary closure of 32 airports across northern and western India, halting civilian flight operations amid rising military conflict with Pakistan. The shutdown spans from May 9 through May 14, 2025, following India’s May 7 strikes on terrorist camps and subsequent Pakistani border shelling.
DGCA Airport Closures and Air Travel Disruptions
The airports closed until May 15 include major hubs like Srinagar, Amritsar, Adhampur, and Ambala. Thousands of affected travelers now seek alternative transportation, causing crowding at railway stations and bus terminals.
Meanwhile, the Airports Authority of India has extended closures of 25 Air Traffic Service routes within the Delhi and Mumbai Flight Information Regions until late May 14.
Air India and IndiGo have announced flight cancellations following the DGCA advisory, with carriers offering alternative routes and processing refunds for canceled flights.
The shutdown of Indian airports has forced international airlines to reroute flights, adding hours to journey times and raising fuel costs. Aviation industry analysts project millions in additional operational expenses from these diversions.

Security Concerns and Outlook Following DGCA Advisory
The civilian flight suspension in India primarily addresses safety concerns about potential airspace violations during heightened military alertness. Defense experts point to risks from active anti-aircraft systems along the border, which prompted the aviation regulator’s announcement. Despite military tensions, the Ministry of External Affairs maintains that diplomatic channels remain open.
This represents the most significant disruption to Indian airspace since February 2019’s Balakot airstrikes. Authorities continue monitoring the situation, noting that restrictions could extend if hostilities continue. Travelers should verify flight status directly with airlines before departing for any airports in the region.
