To spread tourism more evenly across the country, the Indian Government has announced an INR 800 crore investment to develop lesser-known destinations in Northeast India. This initiative aims to reduce overcrowding at popular tourist sites while promoting sustainable travel and providing economic opportunities for local communities.

The project spans six northeastern states and aims to enhance infrastructure and create new experiences, turning hidden gems into must-visit attractions.

Promoting Lesser-Known Destinations in Northeast India

The new projects will focus on elevating lesser-known destinations in Northeast India, diversifying tourism, and more equitably distributing visitors.

The states selected for these developments are Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Sikkim, and Tripura.

Major upgrades to their tourism infrastructure will help make these areas viable, attractive alternatives to the country’s more crowded destinations. The states have already received the first phase of funding, which amounts to 66% of the total INR 800 crore, and they are expected to complete the projects by March 2026.
