From 22 November 2025, Iran’s visa rules for Indians will change drastically. Indian nationals holding ordinary passports will no longer be able to enter or transit through Iran without a visa. Tehran has suspended its visa-free travel facility for Indians, citing concerns over fraud, human trafficking, and kidnappings.
Why the Iran Visa Policy Changes and What Indian Travellers Must Know
New Delhi’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) says the suspension responds to rising abuse of the visa-waiver system. Several Indian nationals, lured by fake job offers or promises of onward transit, were reportedly trafficked or kidnapped for ransom once they reached Iran.
The visa-waiver, introduced in February 2024 to encourage tourism, allowed Indians a stay of up to 15 days once every six months — but only for tourism. The MEA emphasizes that this privilege never covered employment.
In a statement, the MEA explained: “From this date [22 November 2025], Indian nationals with ordinary passports would be required to obtain a visa to enter or transit through Iran.” They added that the move “is intended to prevent further misuse of the facility by criminal elements.”
What Indian Travellers Should Do Under the New Iran Travel Requirements

- Apply for a visa in advance: Under the new regime, all ordinary passport holders need a valid visa to board flights to or via Iran.
- Be wary of agents: The MEA strongly warns against using agents who promise “visa-free travel or onward transit.” Such schemes may be fronts for criminal networks.
- Exercise vigilance: Given the documented risk of job fraud and kidnapping, the MEA advises Indian travellers to remain alert and verify employment or travel offers carefully.
