Planning an international trip from India? You’re now more likely to fly on an Indian airline than ever before. From April to June this year, the Indian airlines’ international market share reached nearly half of all flights from India, giving travelers more choices for their overseas journeys.
The growth of Indian airlines in global travel is clear in the numbers: out of 17.6 million people flying in and out of India during these three months, more than 8 million chose domestic airlines for their trips. The latest Indian airlines market share 2024 statistics show a big change from before the pandemic when Indian carriers handled only about one-third of international travelers.
Record Growth Signals More Travel Options
According to Manish Gupta, senior director at CRISIL Ratings, “increasing disposable incomes, easing visa requirements, growing number of airports, and enhanced air travel connectivity are likely to lead the international passenger traffic to annually grow at 10 to 11% over the next four years.” This growth means more flight options for travelers in the coming years.
Indian airlines are getting ready for this travel boom. IndiGo, known mainly for domestic flights, is making a bold move by ordering its first fleet of wide-body aircraft – the kind that can fly longer distances. This means travelers might soon be able to take IndiGo flights to far-off destinations. Air India is also expanding its fleet, promising more comfortable options for long-haul travelers.
What This Means for Your Future Travel Plans
The increase in international travel by Indian airlines has created some competition in the market. While foreign airlines want to add more flights to India, Indian carriers are pushing back, hoping to protect their growing success. For travelers, this competition could mean better services as airlines vie for passengers, though it might limit some foreign carriers’ choices.
By 2028, Indian airlines are expected to operate half of all international flights from the country. For travelers, this could mean:
- More direct flights to international destinations
- Potentially better deals on international travel
- Familiar service standards they’re used to on domestic flights
- Easier connections between domestic and international flights
- More frequent flyer benefits when staying with Indian carriers
The rise of Indian carriers in international skies signals a new era for travelers, with more options and potentially better connectivity to destinations around the world.
