Nepal’s political crisis deepened on Tuesday, September 9, as violent protests forced the shutdown of Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. The closure stranded passengers and disrupted airlines and prompted India’s travel advisory to Nepal, urging its citizens to stay away from the Himalayan nation.
Airport Shutdown Amid Escalating Protests
The unrest was triggered by a government ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp. Although the ban was quickly reversed, the demonstrations grew into a broader movement against corruption, censorship, and economic hardship.
In just two days, clashes left at least 19 people dead and caused major damage in Kathmandu. Protesters set fire to the prime minister’s residence, parliament, and other government buildings. As violence spread, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned, and the army was deployed to protect key sites.
On September 9, authorities issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) suspending all airport operations “until further notice.” Flights operated by IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and FlyDubai were canceled or diverted to Indian cities such as Lucknow and Delhi. The crisis has also increased concerns about India-Nepal border tensions, with security tightened at several crossings.

India Issues Travel Safety Advisory
In response, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a travel warning for Nepal. Citizens were advised to postpone travel to the country and, if already in the country, to remain indoors and follow local guidance.
“Indian nationals are urged to avoid non-essential movement and contact the Embassy of India in Kathmandu in case of emergency,” the MEA stated. Emergency helplines have also been activated as part of the travel safety advisory in India.
Tourists in Kathmandu faced immediate challenges. The Nepal Tourism Board arranged shuttle buses to transport stranded visitors between central hotels and the airport. Airlines offered waivers on rescheduling fees while warning passengers of further cancellations.
Broader Implications of Nepal Protests 2025
The Nepal protests highlight the frustration of young Nepalis who face limited job opportunities at home and rely heavily on overseas work. What began as anger over social media restrictions has quickly turned into the country’s most serious political crisis in years.
As of Wednesday morning, Tribhuvan International Airport remained closed, with no timeline announced for reopening. For India—the largest source of foreign visitors to Nepal—the situation raises safety concerns for travelers and thousands of Indian nationals living there.
With tensions running high, both governments have called for calm. Flights remain suspended, the capital is tense, and India warns citizens that travel carries significant risks.
